Phagocytosis of apoptotic cells
Elimination of damaged and superfluous cells is essential for normal development and homeostasis. Billions of cells undergo programmed cell death every day inside our bodies and are cleared by phagocytes. The importance of cell death and clearance is illustrated in cases when they fail and a number of auto-immune and chronic inflammatory diseases develop. Although apoptosis has been studied extensively and many important molecular players have been identified, most of the studies have been performed in vitro or as end-point assays in vivo and we do not have good understanding of the dynamics of the process in situ
The goals of my research are to characterize, in detail, the progression of apoptosis and clearance of dead cells in physiologically relevant models, identify the molecular mechanisms involved and learn how to manipulate them. Armed with this knowledge, I would try to devise therapeutic strategies targeting defects in the progression and clearance of dead cells that are likely to benefit patients with diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
